The Housing Fund
In 2017, Marshall joined The Housing Fund, a CDFI private nonprofit revolving loan fund located in Nashville, TN.
In 2019, Marshall was recently recognized as one of Nashville’s Most Admired CEOs by his peers and the Nashville Business Journal and installed into the Tennessee Affordable Housing Coalition Hall of Fame for his efforts in affordable housing over the last 20 years. He was featured on the cover of the Nashville Post BOOM! Magazine 2018 for helping to establish Nashville’s first community land trust model as a solution to addressing a growing affordable housing issue in the city.
Previously, he served as President of Housing and Multifamily Development for Community Ventures in Lexington, KY. Also, he spent 13 years at NeighborWorks America in various roles in the Southern Region located in Atlanta, GA.
Before joining NeighborWorks, Marshall was a safety and soundness bank examiner for the Office of Thrift Supervision. His banking career started in a management training program for Third National Bank (eventually, SunTrust Bank) in Nashville, Tennessee. He later relocated to Atlanta, GA and worked as a mortgage loan officer with several banks. In 1992, he was honorable discharged from the United States Army after serving five years while being stationed in Germany and at Fort Knox, KY.
After completing his military service at Fort Knox, he attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, where he received a degree in finance. He completed a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in nonprofit management from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In 2016, Marshall completed an Executive Leadership Certification at Georgetown University in Washington D.C.

Kristin Messerli is the founder of Cultural Outreach and a nationally renowned speaker on adapting to cultural shifts. Her mission is to increase upward mobility in young and underserved markets by bridging the gap between consumers and businesses. Kristin is also the Managing Editor of Mortgage Women Magazine and sits on MBA’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Steve Shoemaker's Bio
Director of Residential Mortgage Production
Steve Shoemaker, CMB began his lending career with Norwest in 1989 in Des Moines, IA. He currently serves as the Director of Residential Mortgage Production for Synovus Mortgage Corp. Steve is focused on recruiting top talent and mentoring them to be successful field originators. He is committed to educating originators and empowering them to be successful. Steve is also an approved Continuing Education instructor for Realtors through the Alabama Center for Real Estate. He instructs Realtor education courses that he is responsible for writing. Steve is utilized by the national Mortgage Bankers Association to instruct Mortgage Banking Bound, all three School Of Mortgage Banking classes, as well as serving on the oral panels for CMB candidates. He has instructed courses at Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and FHA. He is the 2012 Willis Bryant Winner for outstanding academic achievement at the School of Mortgage Banking. Steve received his Master’s Degree from Drake University and his undergraduate degree from Iowa State University.

Miguel Vega is First Community Mortgage’s Chief Diversity Officer, Senior Vice President of Business Development and Community Outreach. He leads the company’s planning and execution of Multi-Cultural and Affordable Lending Strategies. Miguel joined FCM in 2016 as Associate Vice President of Business Development, focusing on the Hispanic market. Under his direction, First Community Mortgage won the Mortgage Bankers Association National Diversity and Inclusion Residential Leadership Award for Market Outreach Strategies.
Miguel is a Marketing graduate of California State University – Los Angeles. He has also earned degrees and certifications in Business and Marketing Strategy from Cornell University in NY, and Economics and International Trade from ITAM and ITESM in Mexico. Miguel’s past positions include Trade Commissioner of Mexico and Director of Business Development for the Trade and Investment Office of Mexico in Los Angeles, responsible for the California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada Region. Corporate Category Manager for the Top Consumer Electronics Retail Chain in Southern California and Arizona; and Vice President of Business Development of Electronic Express, the Top Regional Consumer Electronics Retailer in Middle Tennessee and Alabama.
Miguel has an active role with community outreach and strategic partnership projects. He is a founding member of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP) in Nashville where he serves as 2019-2020 Chapter President. He is a member of the Mortgage Bankers Association’s National Advisory Council on Affordable Homeownership, the THDA Housing Industry Advisory Board, and The Housing Fund of Tennessee Board of Directors. Also serves as Director of Strategic Alliances of the Tennessee Latin American Chamber of Commerce and an officer of the Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity.
Miguel is a keynote speaker of the National Hispanic Corporate Council, a frequent lecturer at MTSU on topics regarding US Hispanic Market trends, leadership and organizational innovation, and mentor for high school seniors in the Tennessee Achieves Program.
Darryl Ward's Bio
Affordable Lending Manager
Darryl Ward resides in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. He has spent 28 years in the Mortgage Banking industry, with 16 years in loan origination and splitting the other 12 years between community development and CRA management. Mr. Ward is an Accredited Mortgage Professional (AMP), specializing in assisting those who are first-time homebuyers, people with low to moderate income, and buyers in underserved communities.
Darryl has been married to Sharon for 29 years. They have two sons, Myles and Marcus, and just became empty nesters. Mr. Ward has also served in the Marine Corps and coached youth baseball and basketball. When Mr. Ward is not serving others needs in the mortgage industry, he loves traveling.
